Unconventional Gas Hydraulic Fracturing Flowback Water Reuse and Treatment

The Challenge

Integrated Sustainability was retain to analyze options and develop a comprehensive solution for reducing fresh water requirements, water transportation costs, and wastewater disposal costs.

The Result

The team successfully evaluated flowback water chemistry, modeled water mixing scenarios, evaluated treatment technology, and developed a strategy for flowback water recycling to achieve water and waste management goals. This comprehensive evaluation answered concerns regarding how different water chemistry could:

  • Adversely interact with frac fluid chemistry
  • Adversely interact with reservoir properties
  • Interfere with some treatment processes
  • Create a waste stream that will require special handling

Disposal Water Solids Mitigation

Investigate solutions to mitigate unexpected solids in the blowdown and regen streams upstream of the disposal wells at a SAGD facility. The investigation required lab analyses of the filter solids, a process study of each facility and chemical modelling to determine the root causes behind solid formation.

Structural Analysis & Design Update Recommendations for Timber Structure

Integrated Sustainability was retained to evaluate and confirm that the loads provided by the addition of architectural timber fascia features can be supported by the existing building cladding system at an existing facility undergoing expansion. Integrated Sustainability was also asked to develop stamped structural engineering designs, as well as connection detailing for the architectural timber features, based on previously designed architectural layouts.
