Integration of Hydrogeological Data Using GIS-Based Modelling for Spatial Identification of Fluid Injection Potential and Emerging Challenges for the Oil Sands

The Challenge

Integrated Sustainability was retained by the client in order to provide hydrogeological and geospatial analytical services for the creation of a regional fluid disposal assessment in the Athabasca Oil Sands region. This analysis was also intended to highlight the feasibility of safe fluid disposal solutions through consideration of environmental impacts, costs, and associated treatment processes and byproducts.

The Result

Our services resulted in the creation of a unique MCA and BIS-based model to integrate hydrogeological parameters, industry knowledge, and constraining factors to identify opportunistic areas for fluid disposal in suitable geological formations. The resulting quantification of total disposal volumes and theoretical injection rates was able to assist in the formation of future disposal strategies for both regional and sub-regional operations.
